An Expansion device is one of the major components in the Air Conditioning system. It regulates the flow of gas inside your car air conditioning system. The Expansion valve receives the cool liquid refrigerant under high pressure circulated by the receiver-drier. It allows the liquid to pass through an orifice tube by sensing the temperature of the Evaporator, or Cooling coil. According to how cool you want it in your car, the expansion valve releases the cool refrigerants. If you increase the cooling level of your BMW A/C system, the expansion valve expands to release more refrigerant. Likewise, if you decrease the level, it slows down the flow of refrigerant.
The expansion device has three pressure points to regulate the amount of refrigerant entering the system. They are the evaporator, bulb and the spring.
