The A/C Compressor is actually a mechanical pump which is powered by a drive belt connected to the engine's crankshaft. Its main job is to supply and regulate the flow of refrigerant throughout the system. The A/C system has a high pressure side and a low pressure side which is defined as discharge and suction. The Compressor sucks the refrigerant gas from the Evaporator at the low pressure side, compresses at a high temperature and sends it to the Condenser.
The refrigerant vapor is then cooled and changed into liquid by the condenser. The A/C Compressor and the Condenser are located in the outside air portion of the A/C system.
